Fender Stratocaster Eric Clapton Masterbuilt GoldLeaf Strat (limited edition).
This is one of 50 originally made & signed by Clapton.
This one was also made by Mark Kendrick, the builder of Claptons original Goldleaf in 1996.
The Gold Leaf Stratocaster
The original Gold Leaf guitar was built by Fender Master Builder Mark Kendrick as a custom order for Eric Clapton at the time of the 50th Anniversary of the firm in 1996 and was Slowhand’s main instrument of choice during the Legends period in 1997.
Clapton used the guitar for the last time during his One More Car, One More Rider world tour of 2001 before selling it to Christies for US $455,000.
The Fender Custom Shop reissued the Gold Leaf Clapton Stratocaster after 8 years of absence as a limited-edition run of 50 pieces.
The neck on this guitar is amazing. neck profile is superbly V, and the wood is a beauty.
Is this gold leaf 24k, 23k, 22k, or is it Metal Leaf?nursing
Hello,
sorry for the late answer…
it’s supposed to be 24K gold leaf polyurethane clear-coated.
Olivier.
Hi. Are you interested in selling it? What’s a Gold Leaf worth?
Hello, thanks for visiting my website.
The original was sold by Clapton at Christies for 455 000 $…
I’d say this one is probably worth 7 000 $.
It is quite unclear on the Internet wether there has been 15, or 50 of this kind, and I saw a new one from 2011 sold as one of the supposed 50 run…
I tried to get some information from Fender but got no answers.
Mine was made by Mr Kendrick himself, the master who created the original for Clapton.
Some people argue on the Internet that there should be no TBX on this model, mine has the TBX…
Some people argue on the Internet that there should be no Clapton signature on the back of the headstock, mine has the signature…
Some people say that Kendricks made only 6, and I guess mine is one of them…
Anyway so far I am not selling, and regarding the price, well, as all things quite rare, its price is the price someone is ready to pay for it.
If you have info about this guitar, I’ll be glad to hear it.
best regards,
Olivier.
I have talked to Fender about these guitars. Fender put out the 50 reissues at around $8,000 per piece with an embargo on no copies for a year. After that year though anyone could order a Gold Leaf Strat for around $4,000. Bummer! The run of 50 is special though so maybe worth a little more? Be good to find out which ones had the TBX and signatures and which didn’t. I’m looking at one which was made in 2005 and has the Lace Sensors like the original. It’s a one off order built by MK too. Has the gold signature of Mark’s on the back but no EC signature. Also not sure on the tone controls yet. Will keep you posted once I receive it. Cheers.
Wikipedia stated erroneously that Clapton used the Gold Leaf Strat for the last time during the One More Car, One More Rider world tours in 2001.
According to Lee Dickson (EC’s former guitar tech), Eric used a fan’s Gold Leaf for the encore during three shows at Budokan in 2001. Also, the gold leaf texture and the flame pattern on the neck are quite different from the original EC-1 he played in the late 1990s.
I have the second one of 50 made and it is for sale.
It has everything including the box that it was shipped in. I think I played it only twice
Hello
Is it actually one of the 1st 50?
They int. Left the serial No’s vague so no 50 would be no diff. than # 1
